Welcome to Grade One! Grade One Curriculum Language Arts: Reading and writing are extremely important skills to develop early on in a child’s life, and in Grade One, we will be focusing intensely on these two skills. Throughout the school year, your child will be engaged in various opportunities to: make predictions, retell main events of a story, write their own fairy tales and information books, develop the ability to follow increasingly difficult instructions, read silently, develop the proper use of periods, capitals, and other punctuation marks, and write increasingly longer journal entries. We will be engaging in a program called “Literacy Place,” where the children will work in smaller groups and develop the many skills listed above. Mathematics: Students will learn many new concepts in math this year. Some topics that we will cover include: recognizing and continuing patterns; counting orally to 100 by 1’s, 5’s, 10’s, and 2’s; learning about probability; addition and subtraction to 20; identifying and naming 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional objects; measurement using standard and non-standard units; telling time; and money. Religion: Our Diocesan theme this year is “Serve with Joyful Hearts.” I encourage each child to explore the many different ways in which they can live out the Gospel in their everyday lives. In addition to this theme, our Religion program will also encompass: discovering Jesus as our friend; learning about the sacraments, the holy seasons of Advent and Lent; learning how God is our Good Shepherd; and understanding that we are called to be Jesus’ disciples. Science: In the science curriculum, we will learn many different concepts such as: distinguishing the characteristics of living and non-living things and their basic needs; discovering the seasons and how they differ; learning about the life cycle of salmon and pumpkins; gathering information about the needs of farm animals; the concept of force and how it affects us; and magnets. Social Studies: The Grade One socials curriculum includes: rights and responsibilities of the students’ in school; mapping skills; care for the environment; family unit; and community. Information Technology: Our goal this year is to integrate as much information technology as possible throughout the curriculum. The students will also be expected to familiarize themselves with basic computer skills such as: turning on and off the computer; browsing teacher-approved websites; learning the proper names of the various parts of the computer; and beginning typing skills. Expectations: The Grade One’s have agreed upon a set of rules and expected behaviours, which are now posted in the classroom. I believe that the development of rules/behaviours at an early stage is important to provide consistency in the students’ day to day experience. If a student breaks a rule, there will be the following consequences, depending on the severity and the number of “repeat offences”: 1. Verbal warning; 2. Sorry note; 3. Miss play time outside; 4. Call home; 5. Written contract between teacher and student, and principal’s involvement. Homework: It is expected that students are to participate in home reading with their parents. This means that each child will read with, and to their parents for about 15 minutes each day. For this program, the students will read two books to you, and write a simple statement about each book. (eg. I liked the book because the clown was funny.) Students will be required to read and write their statements about the books, and return the books and their Home Reading duotangs each day. Routines: Book Exchange will take place everyThursday, so please ensure that all school library books are brought back by this day. Library books can be dropped off in our blue library box in the Grade One classroom. Gym is on Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays. Please have your child’s gym strip underneath his/her school uniform on these days, as students change for gym in the classroom. Also, please ensure that your child has proper gym shoes that he/she leaves here in his/her gym mesh bag on his/her cloakroom hook.
