Welcome parents of Grade 3 students,
To better serve your child and to help you guide your child towards a rewarding Grade 3
year, I have outlined some guidelines for parents along with some of the class routines
and expectations.
How You Can Help Your Child:
1. All students are expected to arrive at school in complete uniform, on time and
ready to work. This includes eating a healthy breakfast before coming to school
and getting enough sleep. Many students come to school tired. Please ensure
that your child obtains enough sleeping hours so he/she is ready to learn.
2. Your child will receive an average of 30 minutes of homework each night.
This will include approximately 15-20 minutes of nightly math homework. The
amount of time it takes students to complete their homework could vary greatly
depending on each child. If homework is not completed, the work will be sent
home along with a homework slip which will need to be signed by a parent. If it
is not possible for your child to complete their nightly homework, please write a
small note in their agenda letting me know. Any incomplete homework will be
expected to be completed by the next day.
3. On a daily basis, your child is given time to complete their agenda book. After
your child has completed his/her agenda, he/she must show me it to be initialed.
Each evening, please check and review to make sure they have completed their
homework and initial the day. I would encourage you to use the agenda as a
form of communication between myself and you. If you have a short question
that I could easily answer, please feel free to write it in their agenda book and
I will do my best to respond. Please encourage your child to be independent
and responsible for their own work. By working together, we can help your child
develop into a responsible, caring individual.
4. Please let me know if your child has any medical problems, allergies, hearing
loss, impaired vision, etc. Also, if your child is absent for any reason, or needs to
leave school early, a note MUST be written.

5. Please let me know about any problems before they get out of hand. I also

would appreciate knowing when something is going well. A quick phone call may

relieve a lot of unnecessary worries. It may also lighten up a teacher’s day! You

may reach me at school in the mornings between 8:15-8:40 and 3:00-4:00.

Class Routines and Expectations

Gym days are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  Please ensure that your child wears his/her gym shirt and shorts under his/her uniform and that they have their runners in a bag at school.  If this is a problem for your child, please let me know and send a note requesting that your child be given permission to change in the bathroom.  If your child cannot participate in gym, please send a note with your child excusing him/her.

Library day is every Friday.  Your child must return or renew a library book at this time.  Your child may also return and sign out a book whenever there is a parent/teacher librarian in the library.

French will be taught by Mr. Campanile on Thursdays. This year, students will also be using Rosetta Stone, a new computer program that reinforces the French skills taught in class.  Students will go into the computer room twice per week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

S.Q.U.I.R.T.(Super Quiet Uninterrupted Individual Reading) is daily from 12:45-1:05.  Children may read a book from home, the classroom or school library.  School policy will not allow children to go to the washroom (unless an emergency) during this time.  Students are encouraged to use the washroom before heading out for recess or upon returning to the classroom.

Our spelling program is based on the Teaching Spelling Skills program.  On Mondays, students will complete a pre-test and then I will introduce a rule/pattern for spelling.  They will then be sent home the words for that week along with some homework that works on phonics, grammar and word recognition.  Their spelling homework will be due Wednesday, so that I can mark it that evening and return it to your child by Thursday. This will ensure that they can learn from any mistakes that they have made.  The spelling post test will be given every Friday in order to determine that the words have been learned.

I would encourage and expect students to be reading at home for at least 15-20 minutes each evening.  Parental involvement with reading has positive influences on a child’s reading achievement and comprehension.  I will be sending a home reading log home soon and expect students to record their reading minutes each evening.

This year, I am excited to begin a new religion program, entitled Our Life with Jesus. Students will learn about the life of Jesus, and develop a deeper understanding of God’s loving plan.  We will also be developing a greater understanding of Church doctrine and scriptural references.

Students will also be developing their prayer life by learning traditional Catholic prayers as well as spontaneous prayers. Children are involved with daily prayers in the morning, at lunch and at the end of the day.  They will also be attending Mass every second Wednesday at 9:30. Parents are always welcome to attend.  I also encourage parents to foster prayer in their own homes by praying as a family each day.  Attendance at Sunday Mass is also an integral aspect of our faith and I expect students to be at Mass each week. We will be discussing as a class Sunday’s readings on Fridays as well as the sermons each Monday morning.  It would be beneficial to briefly discuss the sermon and readings each Sunday with your child.

Family Prayers

Bless Our Family

All praise to You, Lord Jesus,
Lover of children:
Bless our family,
And help us to lead our children to You.

Give us light and strength,
And courage when our task is difficult.
Let Your Spirit fill us with love and peace,
So that we may help our children to love You.

All glory and praise are Yours, Lord Jesus,
For ever and ever.

Amen.

An Evening Family Prayer

Lord, behold our family here assembled.
We thank you for this place in which we dwell,
For the love that unites us,
For the peace accorded to us this day,
For the hope with which we expect the morrow;
For the health, the work, the food and the bright skies
That make our lives delightful;
For our friends in all parts of the earth.
Amen.
